Cashmere High School’s Principal Resigns

The much-respected principal of Cashmere High School, Joe Eccleton, has accepted the role of Executive Principal at Christ’s College from the start of Term Four (October 14, 2024).

Chairman of the CHS Board of Trustees, James O’Connell, sent the following letter to the school community to announce Joe Eccleton’s resignation.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce Mr Eccleton’s resignation. While we are saddened by his departure, we respect his decision, and we are grateful for the positive impact he has made during his tenure.

It was clear the decision was difficult for Mr Eccleton. He has a strong connection and a long history with Cashmere High School, and there were many people to consider.

Mr Eccleton’s leadership has steered us through the challenging COVID period while managing property projects and ensuring our academic, cultural, and sporting results are the best the school community has ever seen. His role as President of the Canterbury West Coast Secondary Principal’s Association is a testament to his ability to serve quietly and beyond expectations. And, arguably most revealingly, he has enjoyed a school community that has constantly voiced their appreciation for his efforts.

For Term Two, our school remains under Mr Eccleton’s direct leadership. Due to a pre-earned professional sabbatical for Mr Eccleton, Associate Principal Ms Carla Smith will be Acting Principal in Term Three.

The School Board will now begin an extensive and rigorous process to appoint the next Principal of Cashmere High School. Given the strength of our community and the excellent position of the school, we are confident of attracting the best possible applicants to this role. The School Board would like to reassure the school community that during this transition, the school’s operations will continue smoothly, and the welfare of students and staff will be our top priority.

Thank you, Mr Eccleton for all that you do, and the Board of Trustees wish you all the best for your future. You have been an inspiring educational leader for our community.

Thank you to the staff, pupils, and wider school community; we know we will have your support as the Board of Trustees begins the recruitment process.

Yours sincerely

Mr James O’Connell

Board Chair
